Ocean's 13

Ocean's 13 is our hideaway on Madeira. Unobstructed views across the Atlantic Ocean, a 10 minutes stroll to the beach and restaurants of Ponta do Sol and 25 km away from Funchal are the perfect mix to relaxe and to enjoy this beautiful island.

The House

Our house is situated 80 m above sea level with an unobstructed view across the village of Ponta do Sol and the Ocean. It is a mixture of old and new. The old house was built in the 1930's when it was used as a farm house and has been refurbished so that it accommodates the open kitchen downstairs, plus a bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a study (which could also sleep 2) upstairs. The modern extension was added in 2017. It is directly attached to the old house and contains the spacious open-plan living and dining room downstairs and the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom upstairs. The house is perfect for 4 people but can easily sleep 6.

Since the house used to be a working farm, the garden still produces fruit, vegetables and herbs which you are welcome to harvest all year around.

To walk down to the village, it takes roughly 10 minutes. Roads tend to be steep on Madeira so coming back will take you at least 15 minutes.

The Village

Ponta do Sol is situated on the southern coast of Madeira and claims to enjoy the most sun hours of the island. With a population of almost 9.000, it is big enough for all your daily needs, with a supermarket right next to the petrol station, a nice hotel, several restaurants and bars, a wave protected beach with lifeguards on duty (pebble beach), and several scenic walks all within walking distance (e.g. Anjos Waterfall, Levada Nova and Moinho). Ponta do Sol also positions itself as a Digital Native village and has a friendly co-working facility with fast WiFi right in the center of the village.
There is public transport but the buses tend to connect all the small villages and they can be rather irregular, so you need to invest lots of time. A rental car is by far the  better choice and our recommendation. Most rental services are based right at the airport and driving in Madeira is pretty easy. Just expect extremely steep roads when you go up into the mountains, by also within Funchal and the other towns too.

The Island

Madeira is called the flower island or the island of eternal spring for good reason. All year around the temperatures vary around the 20 degrees level, so many houses (at least at sea level) don't have central heating. The volcanic island is 57 km long and 22 km wide and you can easily drive around it within a couple hours. But the island also is very mountainous and the highest peak, Pico Ruivo, has an altitude of 1862m. Roughly half of the 250.000 inhabitants live in the capital Funchal, a very picturesque and relaxed city, where you can find fine dining and shopping opportunities, plus museums and historical architecture.  The ferry to the neighbouring island Porto Santo also leaves from Funchal, which offers the only thing that Madeira itself can't - long, white, sandy beaches. Most of the beaches on Madeira are pebble beaches but there are some (very beautiful) black lava sand beaches in the north. Check out the beach in Seixal - it feels like being on Hawaii.
